Start with the outer edges of the country before working through the interior. The Pacific coast, Atlantic coast and Gulf coast give you useful anchors, while the Great Lakes help separate the upper Midwest from the Northeast. State size can be misleading: a small northeastern state deserves the same attention as a large western one. Alaska and Hawaii are moved into inset positions on this study map, so their placement here does not represent their actual distance from the mainland. This is a 50 states quiz, not a test of federal districts or territories. Washington, DC is therefore outside the answer set. To name the states more reliably, practise a small region and then test it without reading a list. Distinguish Washington state from the national capital, and compare similar neighbouring shapes rather than relying only on their first letters. After a round, use the answer review to identify a recurring confusion. A second short attempt focused on those states is more useful than repeatedly guessing through the whole map without reflection.

Frequently asked questions
Does this quiz include all 50 states?
Yes. The answer set contains the 50 US states. Washington, DC and US territories are not included.
Why are Alaska and Hawaii below the mainland?
They appear as map insets to keep the quiz usable. Their positions and scale relative to the mainland are not geographic measurements.
Can I use a blank US map to name the states?
Choose typing mode. The map highlights one state and asks you to enter its name without an on-map name label.
How do points work in the US states quiz?
A correct first attempt earns three points, a second attempt two and a third attempt one. After three misses, the answer is revealed.
Are tiny northeastern states clickable?
Yes. Small-area markers and zoom controls help with compact shapes. A keyboard-friendly answer list is also available in click mode.
